How to Use AI to Pick Your Golf Simulator Projector

A copy-and-paste prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini that turns your screen size, mount distance and room into a projector shortlist, plus the follow-ups and checks that keep it honest.

Choosing a projector for a golf simulator comes down to a handful of numbers: how wide your screen is, how far back the projector can sit, how bright the room is, and what your PC can drive. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are genuinely good at turning those numbers into a shortlist, as long as you give them the right inputs and check their work. Here is how we use them, including the prompts.

Step 1: gather the numbers before you ask

An AI can only work with what you tell it. Measure these first and write them down. Our projector guide explains why each one matters.

  • Screen size: width and height of the visible impact screen in feet or inches (for example 12 ft × 9 ft, which is 4:3).
  • Projector position: how far the lens will be from the screen, and how high. Usually a ceiling mount a few feet in front of the golfer, so measure from the screen to that spot.
  • Ceiling height and anything in the way: ducts, beams, lights, the overhead launch monitor.
  • Room light: windows or no windows, and whether you will play with lights on.
  • What else the room does: golf only, or also gaming and movies.
  • Your computer: 1080p or 4K capable (see our PC guide).
  • Budget and whether you are in Canada (availability and pricing differ from the US).

Step 2: the prompt

Paste this into any AI assistant and fill in your numbers. Being specific about the mount position is the single most important part, because it decides the throw ratio you need.

I'm choosing a projector for a home golf simulator in Canada. Please recommend 3 to 5 current models and explain your reasoning.

My setup:
- Impact screen: 12 ft wide x 9 ft tall (4:3 aspect ratio)
- Projector will be ceiling mounted roughly 6 ft in front of the screen, 9.5 ft off the floor, centred on the screen
- Ceiling height: 10 ft; there is an overhead launch monitor mounted 10 ft from the screen, so the projector must sit between the screen and that unit
- Room: basement, no windows, but we usually play with the lights on
- Uses: golf simulator software (GSPro and Uneekor), plus PlayStation gaming and the occasional movie
- Computer: can output 4K at 60 Hz
- Budget: around CAD $2,500

Please:
1. Calculate the throw ratio I need from those measurements and state it.
2. Only suggest projectors whose throw ratio (including zoom range) covers it.
3. Prefer at least 3,000 lumens, low input lag (under 20 ms in game mode), and either 4:3 support or enough resolution to letterbox a 4:3 image without looking soft.
4. For each model, list: throw ratio range, brightness, native resolution, input lag, laser or lamp, and whether it supports lens shift.
5. Flag anything you are unsure about so I can verify it on the manufacturer's spec sheet.

Step 3: follow-up prompts that sharpen the answer

The first answer is a starting point. These follow-ups are where the real value is.

  • “Show me the throw ratio math for each model at my 6 ft distance. What image width does each one produce at the wide and tight end of its zoom?”
  • “If I move the mount to 7 ft from the screen, which of these still work?”
  • “Which of these keep low input lag at 4K, not just at 1080p?”
  • “My screen is 4:3 and these projectors are 16:9. Explain exactly how the image will fit and how much brightness I lose.”
  • “Compare the top two on fan noise, lamp or laser life, and warranty in Canada.”
  • “What mount height and vertical offset do I need for each model so the picture lands square on the screen without keystone correction?”

Step 4: verify before you buy

AI assistants are excellent at the arithmetic and the comparison, and they are occasionally confident about a spec that is wrong or a model that has been discontinued. Before ordering, do three things:

  1. Open the manufacturer’s spec sheet for the model you chose and confirm the throw ratio, lumens and input lag figures.
  2. Run the numbers through the manufacturer’s own throw calculator with your exact distance and screen width.
  3. Check that the model is sold and supported in Canada. Warranty service is much easier when it is.

A quick sanity check that catches most mistakes: throw ratio × screen width = distance. If the AI says a 0.5 throw projector fills your 12 ft screen from 8 ft away, it is wrong. It needs to be at 6 ft.

Step 5: send us the shortlist

Once you have two or three candidates, send them to us along with your measurements. We stock projectors we have actually set up in simulator bays, we know which ones misbehave with 4:3 screens or specific launch monitors, and free technology advice comes with every purchase. AI gets you to a good shortlist fast. A human who has mounted a hundred of them gets you to the right one.
